sour security

(narrative)

Sour Security is a darkly comedic puzzle sandbox game where players step into the shoes of a neurotic security guard. Tasked with "keeping order" in an office, the guard sees every coworker as a threat. Players use everyday office items in creative ways to manipulate the environment, sabotage coworkers, and maintain the guard’s version of justice. The game combines dark humor, environmental storytelling, and chaotic puzzle-solving to create a unique experience.

This project was built around a given theme - Antagonist

What if you played as the antagonist

but one who truly believes he’s the protagonist?

note-12.png

That’s how the guard came to life. In his mind, he’s not the villain—he’s the only one who truly sees the office for what it is. The fake smiles, the mindless small talk, the endless cycle of meaningless work. Is he really an antagonist? It all depends on a perspective.

His lines are exaggerated, sarcastic, and sometimes even philosophical in the most ridiculous way. He turns minor workplace inconveniences into grand betrayals and sees himself as the last true enforcer of justice.

There’s something painfully relatable about his perspective. Haven’t we all, at some point, felt trapped in a place where everything seems absurd? His frustration might be over the top, but deep down, his bitterness hits close to home and makes him an entertaining narrator.

environmental storytelling

I wanted the environment itself to reflect the guard’s paranoia. The office is full of little details that reinforce the game’s themes of corporate dysfunction and forced positivity. The space is designed to feel structured on the surface, but underneath, it’s filled with cracks, both literal and metaphorical.

I created in-game UI elements like posters, signs, and sticky notes scattered around the office that add to the absurdity of the setting.

retrospective

This was my first time writing a dark comedy, and at first, it wasn’t my comfort zone at all. I usually write mysterious, heartbreaking stories with unexpected twists, so when I told my team, "I don’t write happy stories," I meant it. But as I dug into the tone of the game, I realized that comedy was exactly what it needed. I wanted to give the humor more weight, make it funny yet relatable, something that reflects everyday life.

This project proved to me that I can step outside my comfort zone and still tell meaningful stories, no matter the genre. It actually made me want to experiment more—to see how I can bring depth and emotion to different styles of storytelling. So if you ask me to write happy stories I wouldn't be against it anymore.
